April is Earth Month and, as you know, giving clothes a new life is what ThredUp is all about. With our amazing prices on thrifted gems and even deeper discounts on Rescue Boxes with materials to create brand new pieces, there are plenty of affordable ways to keep clothes in closets and out of landfills. But, one of my favorite ways to do this is to turn an older dress into a new crop top.
This piece, originally from Eloquii, gave me plenty of good wears by itself. When it came the time to possibly part with it, I decided I could get even more mileage with the piece if it were a top. I’m no seamstress but it seemed straightforward enough. And it was!
I cut the dress to the desired length, leaving about 2.5 extra inches. Then I measured a length of elastic around my waist with about an inch of extra length. I hemmed the now crop top 90% of the way, fed the elastic through the hem and sewed that together, then completed the hem with the elastic inside.
I also had a classic band tee laying around that I wanted to do something with so I just decided to cut out the front art and slap it on my new crop top. It was a really good color match, so the new addition looked pretty natural to the overall aesthetic.
And there you have it—a perfectly good top ready for its new life and rotation in my wardrobe. Years later and it’s still a closet fave that looks amazing with these statement tulle mint pants, also from Eloquii.
